Basic Nutrition: Why is it Important?

You have likely heard multiple times over the years that proper nutrition is important. But, why exactly is basic nutrition vital for the health of the human body?

Nutrition for Survival

Humans, just like all other living things, require food and water to live. To live well, though, your body requires “good” food or, more precisely, a healthy eating plan rich in nutrients.

Kinds of Nutrients

Macro-nutrients

Food is dividable into macro-nutrients, which are carbohydrates, protein, fats, and water. This type of nutrient gives the body energy, which is measurable in calories.

One gram of each type of macro-nutrient (excluding water) is worth a certain number of calories. Eating foods with these nutrients in it is essential for the body to survive and grow. Carbohydrates, for example, provide energy for the body through a glucose conversion process and protect the muscles.

Proteins, meanwhile, are useful for tissue growth and repair; the more intense your workouts are, the more protein your body needs to do its job well. And, contrary to what you may have heard before, the body needs fat! Fat can protect your organs if you fall and cushion your skin. Water is also necessary as it enables the body to digest food properly, regulate body temperature, remove waste products from the body, and more.

Micro-nutrients

The body also requires micro-nutrients for proper bodily growth and to improve both the function and usage of macro-nutrients. Types of micro-nutrients are vitamins and minerals. As neither vitamins nor minerals can be made in the body, you must consume them through diet (or supplements).

Vitamins help the body metabolize carbohydrates, fats, and proteins so that you get energy from the food you eat. Vitamins encourage healing too, and they are necessary for building bodily tissues. As for minerals they help control the nervous system, are key to forming strong teeth and bones, and enable proper muscle contractions.
